    This course is for youth ages 11-16 who already babysit, will start sometime in the future, or who simply want to learn how to safely stay home alone or with younger siblings.

    Participants will learn how to:
    Supervise children and infants
    Perform basic child care-skills such as diapering and feeding
    Handle bedtime and discipline issues
    Identify safety hazards and prevent injuries
    Care for common injuries and emergencies such as choking, burns, cuts and bee stings
    Communicate effectively with parents
    Find and interview for babysitting jobs
    Develop leadership skills

    This is a 5 hour course and upon successful completion, students will receive official certification cards from the American Safety and Health Institute.

    Blended Learning Courses combine online learning with in-person instruction and the certification exam. For either of these courses, Community CPR/AED and/or Basic First Aid, after registering (within 24 hrs) you will receive an email with your online course link. You can select just Community CPR/AED, just Basic First Aid, or both. You will need to complete your online course prior to your in-person session date that you are registering for here. The online course will teach all of the course information and the in-person session provides the hands-on practice and instructor interaction, as well as the administration of the certification exam(s).

    Students should plan for the online courses to each take approximately 2-3 hours to complete, depending on personal pace. However, they don’t have to be completed all in one sitting. You will be able to stop and start again and the program saves your place. The instructor will not be re-teaching everything in the online course and expects students to learn the material as they go through it. The in-person session is to practice and show the hands-on skills learned in the online course, with the coaching of the instructor.

    Course Descriptions:
    Community CPR/AED (Infant, Child and Adult certification) – Includes instruction in CPR for all ages, use of the Automated External Defibrillator and how to help a victim who is choking.

    Basic First Aid – Class topics include: Response preparation • Recognizing an emergency • Consent • Patient assessment • Bleeding control • Injuries, shock and poisoning • Common first aid situations—bites and stings, heat and cold emergencies, burns and more.

    Upon successful completion, both course provide a two-year official certification from the American Safety and Health Institute (www.hsi.com.)

    In-person session times:
    5:00-6:00p Community CPR/AED
    6:00-7:00p Basic First Aid

    Location:
    A Safety First instructor will meet you at the South Mandarin Library in one of the study rooms. This is not an official Library event; we are simply using a study room under the instructor’s name. Please be sure to read youur email confirmation with instructions on how to find your instructor on the day of the in-person course.

    Our cancellation/refund policy:
    Once an online course link is emailed out, the course is 50% refundable if you choose not to take it at all. Rescheduling of your in-person session must be done 24 hours in advance and you can then be rescheduled for the next available in-person session. Same day cancellations or no-shows cannot be rescheduled. You forfeit taking the course with us.
