Traveling for the holidays? Nothing ruins a vacation faster than an accident, theft or disaster – except maybe bad weather. Here are a few quick reminders as you and your family get ready to take your holiday vacation.
• Keep a close eye on your children and your belongings at all times. Stay aware of your surroundings and the people around you.
• Leave valuable documents and other items in your hotel room safe while you are gone.
• Write down local emergency numbers and directions to the nearest embassy (if traveling abroad) and keep them on your phone or wallet. You can also register with your embassy, which will notify you of any local emergencies.
• Notify your bank or credit union in advance of your travel plans.
• Get travel insurance for your valuables.
•When you check into your hotel, review your emergency escape route.
•Keep an emergency kit in your car with a first aid kit, reflective signs, protein bars or other non-perishable food, bottled water, a flashlight and a tire gauge. Check to be sure your spare tire is in good shape, too.
•Leave your itinerary with a friend or family member who can contact you in case of emergency.
•Make copies of your ID and passport in case either is lost or stolen. Keep one secured in a separate location and leave the other with a friend at home.
•Don’t share your travel photos on social media until you get back home. Otherwise, you are advertising your absence to potential thieves.
